Hasn’t he changed
This is the photograph I had of Boots just before I met him
and here he is now: 
Obviously the setting has changed, but if you look at the pictures he has posted to Granny and Grandpa, you can see how much he has changed.
When I picked him up he was 18months old… or so we thought as his birthday is written down as 1/1/08. However, in that time he has grown a few inches in height so we think he must have been younger, possibly not even a year old. I wonder when his birthday actually is or how to make a good guess? It certainly explains why Martin used to shake his head at some of his behaviours saying ‘he should have grown out of this by now’ – it would seem he shouldn’t have, but he is starting to.

Tricky: dentition gives a bit of a clue, but less in dogs than humans. Some breeds "grow into their paws", but Boots looks like he's a got a fair bit of Saluki or other gaze hound in him, and they have slim paws to start with.
I suppose you could X-ray the ends of his long bones and judge the level of calcification of the growing points?

Well done on bringing into your home and getting him to such a good condition. We have 3 rescued lurchers, they are such lovely dogs.
We don't know exactly how old they are or their birthdays, so we have a "gotcha" day. For us their birthday is the day they came to live with us in their forever home!
I'm not a doggy person but love seeing success stories like this. If I were to have a dog I think I would want to 'rescue' one! It would make a change form children!
As an aside, do you know another Thrupp rescued dog? Angus. He's a collie type of dog, not sure about pedigree though! I think he walks the towpath daily.

You've done a noble thing in rescuing Boots - he's transformed - a real credit to your care. Of course, it's not just his looks - his literary talent (as seen in his collected letters) has also blossomed :-)
