Holland

This summer I will be going to Utrecht for a week, and possibly attaching a weekend in Amsterdam. The question is how to get there. I think I would like to go by train, rather than fly, but my experiences of train travel on this scale are zilch. If anyone has done it, can they tell me the positives and negatives and their recommendations please?

Train journeys in Holland are great - and easy. I've been to Amsterdam by train many times (it's one of my favourite places). Eurostar to Brussels, then train to Amsterdam or Utrecht. Much easier than flying!

Flying IS safer & quicker but it don't half make your arms ache.

You would be nuts to take a train to Amsterdam (and I like trains). Five hours on a train, or 45 minutes by plane. No contest.

For what it's worth, the railways in Holland are fantastically good; you can feign ignorance of the labels and travel in first class if you like... not that I ever did six years ago!

Tis true, train journeys in belgium and holland are great. My last trip to see a young lady in rotterdam was by car.....so...my recomendation is, take the bike :)
Mind you Easy Jet is much much easier and probably cheaper even if you hire a car over there

Only five hours! It takes that long to get to Huddersfield. And I bet the continental trains are nicer.

Train every time. I don't mind flying (or at least I didn't the last time I tried it) but I cannot stand airports.

Utrecht and Amsterdam by train? Easy Peasy. Eurostar from St Pancras, change at Brussels 5 and a half hours £80 return. Time is city centre to city centre not airport to airport and check-in only 30 mins not two hours. Why would anyone fly?

There's a nice boat train from Liverpool Street to Amsterdam via Harwich and the Hook of Holland. Either take all day about it, or get a cabin and sail overnight.
