Garlic Crush

Maffi had an ill equipped kitchen, and when Kim Jim and I were cruising down the K&A there was a certain amount of despairing. As a result I decided to do the decent thing and buy him some kitchen utensils. Amongst these was a garlic crush.

For the last 3 months, when I have been dining aboard Milly M, which was frequently during my hand incident, I have been interested to note that Maffi apologises for the state of the garlic, apparently it "doesn't crush".

Well ladies and gentlemen, I decided to investigate the problem earlier this week and I have another top tip.

When using a garlic crush, peel the garlic first.

Personally - I find just finding a large blunt object and smashing it very hard down onto the garlic works a treat!gets rid of lots of frustrations too...

Would a head count as a "large blunt object" espaecially as in banging against brick wall ?

I generally just slice garlic...

my garlic crisher was bought for me by a concerned girlfriend, but I don't find it's worth the hassle of cleaning it afterwards.

There's few meals I cook that don't include garlic and onions, though.

KH - yes, that would work. Although, given Maffi's recent eye trauma, I wouldn't use him...

Simon - excatly, I think they're made for people who don't want to get their hands dirty (which is the real fun in cooking).

Tip - slice the garlic, then cut the slices into strips, then chop strips. Or mash in a petle and mortar, or smash under the 'heel' of the hand where it joins the wrist. Or use blunt object (as above)..monkey wrentch is good...

I also agree about garlic and onions. Shall we start an alium appreciation society?

Bones - Maffi needs a tea strainer and a nicer teapot.

Oi! Despite having a garlic crusher it still does not crush garlic like it should, leaving lots of garlic in the tool. Slice it it's easier! And besides do you really think it is a good idea for us to be using blunt objects for such a purpose?

Depends whose "blunt object" you intend using. I can think of a few people I would select for this purpose and I'd be happy to supply the wall as well.

Garlic presses are rubbish, they always clog up and even when they're clean they don't produce a good result. If you are making a sauce or something that will cook down, just bash with the flat of a heavy knife and then use the tip to reduce it to a puree.
