Bike and its key

I have a bike locked up on my roof, and I seem to have lost the key. What do people do in situations like this - buy a new bike and use that until the key is found or what? I feel I should know the answer to this - I can only blame my upbringing for having no idea.

pick the lock, or possibly look in the fridge? or pay the earth for a lock smith to come do it.

once yu've convinced yourself you've lost the key, attack oit with an angle grinder, the canal boat builder's friend. That will guarantee, once the lock is cut through, you'll find the key within hours. ;-(

an angle grinder Simon!? You would trust me with one of those in my posession?!?! Just think of the damage I could do.

My boss has helpfully suggested that I look in the bilges - which is a good idea, I lost several keys for a fairly long time, including a card key - all of which turned up in the bilges.
