Camera

I have been thinking about this for some time, and I have decided to actively pursue getting a digital camera (I am currently borrowing my mothers!). I have no idea where to start, so if anyone has any recommendations then I would be delighted to hear what and why! I have a lovely digital camera already but it shoots at 3MegaPix and I need a minimum of 5Mega Pix. The choices available are great, but I often find recommendation is the best!

I am also open to presents if anyone wants to buy me one! [smiles cheekily!]

Hi

It depends on what you wish to use the camera for, how much control you want, the size of your pocket.

There is a nice Nikon that is new to the market about £3,000 and that's just for the body, lens are extra.:)

6mega-pixels will will be fine for printing to A4 size. Most cameras have more now.

Optical zoom is better than digital.

With all due modesty, I've got a lot of experience with digital cameras, so here's my "six penn'orth"

Firstly, Don't be fooled by raw "megapixel" count - despite what the manufacturers would have you believe, this is only one factor in overall picture quality.

"More pixels = more quality" is over-simplistic and simply not true.

However "more pixels = bigger files" IS true, so cameras with a high pixel count will need bigger memory cards or more frequent download to a PC.

The size and type of the image sensor, the image processing software in the camera, exposure metering system, and the lens all have a major influence on image quality.

IMHO the way your camera "handles" is much more important to taking good pictures than the number of "X"'s on the zoom. Ideally, it should behave just like a film camera, but very few "consumer" cameras actually do.

You need to know about important issues like speed of switch-on, speed of focus and shutter delay. Then you don't take loads of pictures that are either empty, or have the @rse end of your subject disappearing from view!

I'd suggest that you take plenty of time to read some independant reviews. "Steves Digicams" is the best source of information that I know of. Don't know if I can post a link here, so just Google it.

In short, forget numbers, they are just there to distract you from the things that really matter.

As Bottle said, decide what you want to use the camera for, and how much you want to pay. Then read the reviews!

I use an Olympus Mju type digital camera. It is splash proof, but ihave discvered it is in fact quite well waterproofed for photographing in the rain.
It feels a bit like a bar of soap in the hand and is a bit slippery, but it switches on fast, its easy to use and has plenty of functionality for doing some more composed arty shots.

I think you can hardly go wrong with digital cameras these days. recommendation is always good, but remember ones mans sausage is another mans meat... so go with something you like the feel of as well as choosing something with decent spec. And I suggest something moisture resistant given your liking of being out in the rain.

hi Honey, thanks for that, I will look it up. I am HOPELESS at making decisions so it is good to have something to look up. I am trauling through the websites at the moment trying to make sense of it.
